Sandra Kelley, also known as ClayPirinha on the internet, is a 28-year-old German artist with African-American roots. She says that it is important for her to mention her origin to show that not all Germans are, as well as not every creative person is, white. The colors of people are indeed as varied as their artworks.
In 2014 Sandra’s grandfather turned eighty and she needed something very special for him. And what is more special than something handmade? So she went to the store, bought her first package of polymer clay and sculpted her first figure. Over time, she has developed a passion for creating with polymer clay.
In the past two years she actually had an increasing number orders from her friends and Instagram followers and she is definitely planning to open a little online shop in the future. Sandra describes herself as a self-taught artist, who loves sculpting to balance out her everyday life. She says that there’s nothing more calming after a long day of work than sitting down and claying for some hours, perhaps with a glass of good wine. She observes that she learned a lot through the years, her creations got better and her inventory of tools grew. Sandra emphasizes that she never wanted to be pigeon-holed, she sees herself as versatile, interested in various styles and creations – and the same applies to her art. She loves trying and learning new things and mixing media.
Fantasy creatures, miniatures, jewelry and creating new stuff nobody thought about before are some of her favourite subjects. Having so many different in interests means that you won't find a single uniting element in her art, except her own style and the fact that she adores working with polymer clay.
The inspiration for this Dobby came from one of Sandra’s friends, who reminded her of their favourite childhood stories and characters. Harry Potter's world was definitely part of it, Sandra is a huge fan of him and, of course, she owns all of the books. Sandra says that both she and her friend loved Dobby, this ugly but cute creature, so clumsy and chaotic in his actions. It was a new challenge for her to sculpt him, since it was the first time that she was creating a figure directly onto a platform with wire armature for better stability. Dobby's rags are made out of an old little linen sack and in some way he always tries to help, so it was clear that this little house elf needed something magic and helpful in his hand: a blue glowing powder in a glass bulb. We all know this: in 'dark' times it is good to have some hope to light the night until the sun rises again, isn't it?

Říká, že je pro ni velmi důležité zmínit svoje kořeny, aby ukázala, že ne všichni Němci, stejně jako ne všichni umělci, jsou bílí. Lidé jsou tak rozmanití a pestří jako jejich tvorba.
V roce 2014 slavil Sandřin dědeček narozeniny a ona potřebovala opravdu výjimečný dárek. Co může být výjimečnější než něco ručně vyrobeného? Šla tedy do obchodu, koupila si první kostičku hmoty a vymodelovala svou první figurku. Během času se polymerové tvoření stalo pro Sandru vášní. V posledních dvou letech má stále více objednávek od přátel i fanoušků na Instagramu a v budoucnu plánuje otevřít svůj vlastní malý internetový obchod.
Sandra o sobě říká, že je umělkyně samouk a tvoří, aby vyvážila všednost každodenního života. Podle ní není nic víc uklidňujícího po náročném dni, než si sednout a pár hodin modelovat, třeba se skleničkou dobrého vína. Všímá si, že se toho během let hodně naučila, její výtvory se stále zlepšují a také její inventář nástrojů se stále rozrůstá. Zdůrazňuje, že nikdy nechtěla být zařazena do nějaké škatulky, samu sebe vidí jako všestrannou, se zájmem o různé styly a náměty – a totéž se dá říct o její tvorbě. Moc ráda zkouší a učí se nové techniky a kombinuje různá média.
Fantazijní bytosti, miniatury, šperky a věci, které nikdo ještě nevyzkoušel, to všechno jsou její oblíbené náměty. To, že ji zajímá tolik různých věcí znamená, že v její tvorbě nenajdete žádný jednotící prvek. Tedy kromě jejího charakteristického stylu a faktu, že miluje práci s polymerovou hmotou.
Inspirace k tvorbě sošky Dobbyho přišla od jedné ze Sandřiných kamarádek, která jí připomněla jejich oblíbené příběhy a postavy z dětství. Svět Harry Pottera tam měl své pevné místo, Sandra je jeho velkou fanynkou a samozřejmě vlastní všechny knihy. Říká, že ona i její kamarádka Dobbyho, tohle roztomile ošklivé stvoření, tak nešikovné a chaotické, milovaly. Dobby byl pro Sandru nová výzva, protože to bylo poprvé, kdy modelovala figurku přímo na podstavci a s použitím drátěné armatury pro lepší stabilitu. Dobbyho otrhaný obleček je vyroben ze lněného pytlíku, a protože se tenhle domácí skřítek vždycky snaží nějakým způsobem pomoci, potřeboval něco kouzelného a užitečného do ruky: skleněnou žárovku s modrým práškem, který ve tmě svítí. Všichni to víme: v obdobích temna je dobré mít naději, která tmu prozáří do doby, než znovu vyjde slunce, že?
