Before moving to her current residence in Alpine, Texas in 2004, Shelley Atwood used to fantasize about living in the desert and being able to feel the connectedness to the earth that is intrinsic part of life out there. In her art Shelley tries to trigger the emotional and psychological connection to the earth found in most ancient or primitive cultures.
Her art aspires to celebrate and honor the earth. She works primarily with polymer clay and silver precious metal clay (PMC) and her favourite techniques involve carving and using paint.
Shelley’s jewellery gives evidence that she truly likes lots of texture and clear definition in her designs, which are derived from ethnic and paleo-archaic art, with strong pre-Columbian and tribal influences.
Shelley admits that the creative process is both a struggle and a joy for her. She loves to witness the transformation of a piece of clay into the final product. Very often the process is organic, she just lets the clay guide her. Sketching is sometimes part of her creative process too. The struggle is usually the result of the tension between the half-formed idea and any vision of the final product. To overcome this issue, Shelley simply gives up on the concept of the final product and immerses herself in the process. Shelley concludes her art comes from hands rather than my brain and we find her hands truly skilful.

Než se Shelley Atwood v roce 2004 přestěhovala do svého současného bydliště, města Alpine v Texasu, často si přestavovala, jaké by to bylo žít v poušti a cítit spojení se zemí, které je nedílnou součástí života na takovém místě. Shelley se snaží o to, aby její tvorba evokovala právě takové emocionální a psychologické napojení na naši planetu, které bylo vlastní starověkým a primitivním kulturám.
Ve své tvorbě se snaží oslavovat a ctít naši zemi. Pracuje nejčastěji s polymerovou hmotou a modelovacím stříbrem a její oblíbené techniky zahrnují rytí a nanášení nejrůznějších barev. Její Jšperky dokazují, že opravdu hodně ráda texturuje a potrpí si na přesnost provedení svých designů, které jsou často založeny na etnickém a prehistorickém umění a se silnými předkolumbovskými a kmenovými prvky.
Shelley přiznává, že proces tvorby je pro ni bojem i radostí zároveň. Je velmi ráda svědkem proměny kusu hmoty do finálního výrobku. Tvůrčí proces je v jejím pojetí velmi často organicky, prostě se nechává hmotou vést. V průběhu tvorby má své místo také skicování. Obtíže při tvoření obvykle pramení z napětí mezi napůl vytvořeným nápadem a vizí finálního produktu. Tento proces vetšinou překonává tím, že se vize prostě vzdá a ponoří se naplno do tvoření. Shelley dochází k závěru, že její umění je spíše výsledkem jejích rukou než mozku a nám se její ruce zdají velmi šikovné.
