We love just about everything about this necklace – the colour combination, the design, the veneer and also the fact that its maker, the artist Manon van Kempen, was inspired by her family to make it.
Manon, who’s Dutch but currently resides in Alicante, Spain, has been working with polymer clay for approximately 10 years now. She specializes in modelling flowers and more recently dog sculptures and organic shapes in general. Her necklaces are usually more traditional in design, but the one that we’re showing you today is very different from her other pieces. Naturally, we wanted to know more about its origin.
As already mentioned, Manon got inspired by her loved ones and her mother in particular. Manon says that her mom is a modern woman who loves bright colors. Unfortunately, she has problems with her hands and she finds it difficult to handle usual jewellery clasps. That is why Manon challenged herself to make a necklace with a clasp her mother could easily use. In the end, she designed a piece where the clasp is also the pendant and the focal point of the necklace. This shows how the need to adapt to certain requirement can make us think out of the box to find solutions. And it’s wonderful, isn’t it?

Na tomto náhrdelníku se nám líbí asi úplně všechno – barevná kombinace, jeho design, vzor a také fakt, že jeho autorka, polymerová umělkyně Manon van Kempen, se při jeho tvorbě nechala inspirovat svou rodinou.
Manon, Holanďanka, která v současné době žije ve španělském Alicante, pracuje s polymerem asi deset let. Specializuje se na modelování květin a v současné době také na sošky psů a obecně na organické šperky. Její náhrdelníky jsou obvykle spíše tradiční, ale ten, který vám představujeme dnes, se velmi vymyká její typické tvorbě. Přirozeně nás tedy zajímalo, jak vlastně vznikl.
Jak už jsme zmínili, Manon se inspirovala svými blízkými, konkrétně vlastní matkou. Manon říká, že její maminka je moderní žena, která má ráda jasné barvy. Bohužel má také problémy s rukama a manipulace s běžným zapínáním na špercích je pro ni velice obtížné. Proto se Manon rozhodla vyrobit náhrdelník, které by její maminka mohla snadno nosit. Nakonec navrhla šperk, ve kterém je zapínání zároveň přívěskem a hlavním designovým elementem. Její příklad nám ukazuje, jak nás snaha přizpůsobit design jistým omezením může přimět myslet novým a originálním způsobem. A to je skvělé, že?
