Polymer clay can be used to make almost anything, but majority of artists use it to make jewellery or small decorative objects. The Australian polymer clay artist Leah Radlett is one of those who chose to use the medium differently – for painting. And we have to say that her style stands out. But how did she actually come up with it?
Leah has always been artistic and created artworks in the past using coloured pencils, ink and acrylic paint. In 2016 she discovered polymer clay and was immediately hooked.
She initially started creating jewellery, but she soon realised that she didn’t like cutting up her beautiful slabs and decided to try experimenting by creating artworks instead. During one of these experiments in December 2017, she created her first ‘bubble’ picture reminiscent of her childhood.
Her original technique is a combination of her love of circles and the concept of pointillism. She has always admired the work of the impressionists who used this style. Their use of dots of colourful paint opened her eyes to the possibilities in art. Her experimentation led her to her own form of pointillism using polymer clay. In her polymer clay paintings, she applies the clay in a similar way to paint.
Most of her pieces are relatively small, just about 11 x 11 centimetres. Even though she has experience with larger pieces, she says she prefers the versatility of working on a small scale. Her inspiration comes from her faith, the beauty of nature, and the way light can be represented in art. She also loves colour.

Z polymerové hmoty se dá vyrobit téměř cokoliv, ale většina umělců z ní vyrábí šperky a malé dekorativní předměty. Australská umělkyně Leah Radlett je jednou z těch, kteří toto médium využívají jinak – k malování. A musíme říci, že její styl opravdu vyniká. Ale jak se k němu vlastně dopracovala?
Leah měla vždy umělecké sklony a v minulosti tvořila s použitím pastelů, inkoustů a akrylových barev. V roce 2016 objevila polymerovou hmotu a byla tímto materiálem okamžitě uchvácena. Ze začátku i ona tvořila šperky, ale brzy si uvědomila, že jen velmi nerada rozřezává dekorované pláty hmoty a začala experimentovat s výrobou jiných formátů. Při jednom takovém experimentu v roce 2017 vytvořila svou první „bublinkovou“ malbu, která jí připomněla dětství.
Její originální technika je kombinací její záliby v kroužcích a pointilismu. Vždy se jí líbila tvorba impresionistů, kteří tento styl hojně využívali. Jejich použití barevných teček jí ukázalo nové možnosti v její vlastní tvorbě. Experimentování ji přivedlo k nalezení její vlastní variace pointilismu, kdy ve svých malbách využívá polymer podobně jako barvu.
Většina jejích děl je poměrně malá, o rozměrech asi 11 x 11 centimetrů. Přestože příležitostně pracuje i na větších kouscích, říká, že práce v malém měřítku jí svou různorodostí naprosto vyhovuje. Inspiruje se nejčastěji svou vírou, krásami přírody a také možnostmi ztvárnění světla v umění. Velmi miluje barvy.
