The essence of minimalism – that’s how you could sum up the art of Yukari Tateuchi. The Japanese artist says that she actually doesn’t know why she creates. She just wants to. She had some experience with jewellery design, and metal carving in particular, before encountering polymer clay for the first time, but working with metal didn’t fully satisfy her.
For her, the biggest advantages of polymer clay are its colours, pliability, lightness and texture. Her creations are simple in design, usually monochromatic, often black or in the shades of gray with a pop of colour. She also likes to add metal leaf accents to her pieces, maybe as a reminder of her metalsmithing period.
